According to UK National statistics, the number of unemployed people, the unemployment rate and the claimant count have all increased. The unemployment rate was 7.1 per cent for the three months to March 2009, up 0.8 over the previous quarter and up 1.8 over the year. The number of unemployed people increased by 244,000 over the quarter and by 592,000 over the year, to reach 2.22 million. These are the largest quarterly increases in the unemployment level and rate since 1981. This result of the recent economic downturn and was have seen an unprecedented number of downsizing organizational changes to address these new challenges in the marketplace. If you aren’t one of these individuals, now is the time to take charge over your career. Development or find your “true passion”. Career Management: This session will offer ways to help you to assess where you are, recognise what you have to offer employers, takes steps to boost your employability and provide a framework for making successful career transitions both within and beyond academia.

Marketing your Experience: CVs & Applications: How can you best present your research skills and experience to persuade an employer of your ability to contribute in a new environment? What are employers looking for in applications and how do they select candidates? Whether you intend to develop your career in research or are considering a career change, this interactive workshop will highlight the techniques for producing effective CVs.
