Every time you open a newspaper nowadays, the first thing you see is the current fear of a recession, the credit crunch, the banking crisis and the difficult days ahead with a downturn of the economy. It seems obvious that there will be cost cutting measures within some organizations, which in turn triggers fears of downsizing. Keeping this in mind, it is better to credit crunch proof your career when there is still time. Even if your company is not affected right now, it is necessary that you build up a strategy to safeguard yourself. There are no magic answers or sure shot solutions but these tactics can help to give you confidence and an added edge.

How to succeed within the interview and your career

We all know that a well designed job search requires much more than help with your CV and job interview tips. Usually it’s good to get advice from the experts and career counsellors or coaches. But, it is far more important to know yourself and to know where you want to end up. Do you have a picture in your mind of where you’ll be in 5 years..10 years? Can you describe it? Have you written it down? With this picture or goal in mind, can you now plan for tomorrow’s career strategy? What can you do, tomorrow, that will lead to the better job or the promotion?

How to help redundant employees

It is good practice to do your best to help employees find a new job. To do this, you could:

1. Advise them to contact their local Jobcentre Plus to find out about suitable vacancies or training.

2. Set up interviews onsite for redundant employees. You could consider using a specialist outplacement agency - outplacement counselling and retraining is tax deductible in respect of all redundant employees, including part-time workers. Or contact other local employers who may have vacancies.

CMI urges employers to keep hiring

The Chartered Management Institute is urging employers to ignore the ‘redundancy stigma’ and continue to hire individuals to avoid wasting potential talent.

A survey released by the Institute of Leadership and Management today shows that a ‘redundancy stigma’ is making it difficult for long-term redundant to re-join the workforce.

CMI calling for all UK organisations to have a green team, led from the top, in place and active by 5 June 2010

Accusations of apathy and self-interest are frequently levelled at young people in the UK. However, research launched by the CMI today reveals that, in terms of embracing the green agenda, those at director and senior management-level risk squandering the enthusiasm of junior and young managers to take action on green issues.

The CMI’s ‘Lean and Green’ report shows a striking disparity between senior and junior staff members at UK organisations in terms of their passion for, and willingness to take action to combat climate change in the workplace. While 81% of managers recognise energy usage is a key business issue, just 26% report that their organisation actively addresses its carbon footprint.
